Temporary Cooling When Equipment Is on Back Order

When does a retail site need temporary cooling?

Temporary cooling is needed during extreme ambient conditions, when parts are on back order, or when replacement equipment lead times run long. The choice is keeping the store trading at reduced comfort or accepting a closure.

That decision is simple to state and expensive to get wrong.

When should you arrange temporary cooling?

The moment a long lead time is confirmed, not when the site becomes uncomfortable. Rental availability and installation planning both depend on acting early.

Two reasons. First, rental availability collapses during regional heat events — the moment you need it is the moment every other operator does too. Second, sizing, placement, power, and condensate all need to be worked out before equipment arrives.

What goes wrong with temporary cooling rentals?

Four failures recur: no rental relationship in place, equipment delivered but not installable, units undersized for the space, and no plan for removal.

  • No relationship in place. Sourcing starts from zero in the middle of a heat event.
  • Equipment delivered but not installable. Nobody scoped the electrical supply, condensate management, or where the unit physically goes, so it sits on the dock.
  • Undersized for the space, which produces the worst outcome: rental cost with no meaningful comfort improvement.
  • No removal plan. Rental charges run for weeks after the permanent repair is complete because nobody owned the exit.

How does REE Mechanical handle temporary cooling?

For Southern California sites, REE Mechanical Inc. has teamed up with Herc Rentals for temporary cooling. We can oversee sizing, installation, and removal, or connect you with the Herc team member closest to your facility.

Overseen by us, temporary cooling is managed as part of the repair rather than as a separate procurement problem.

When should a backordered Southern California site arrange temporary cooling?

As soon as a long lead time is confirmed, not when the weather turns. With a unit down at a Southern California site, call (800) 742-0910 that day.

See temporary cooling rental and setup for scope, and planned replacement to avoid the situation next cycle.
