Summer's here which means it's time to think about whether your air conditioner is in good shape. Would some repairs bring it back to life or should you upgrade it completely? AgeRepair Depending on other important factors, a unit that’s less than 10 years old will likely benefit from repairs. Replace Older units are less efficient and have higher repair costs, so if your system is over 10 years old, you may benefit from a replacement. ProblemsRepair If the repair is minor like a worn capacitor, a clogged drain line, or a small electrical problem, it’s worth repairing. Replace If your blower motor, compressor, or condenser coils fail, it may be more beneficial to replace your unit. Repair CostsRepair If repairs will be less than 50% of the cost of a new unit, they may still be worth considering. Replace If repair costs are more than 50% of the cost of a new unit, you may want to upgrade to a newer, more energy efficient model. EfficiencyRepair If your unit has a SEER rating greater than 13, it’s still probably efficient and may be worth repairing. Replace If your unit has a SEER rating below 13, you may want to invest in a higher rated unit which will help reduce cooling costs. Repair FrequencyRepair If your system has had less than two minor repairs in the last 10 years, it may still be able to be fixed. Replace If your system has had major repairs recently and still isn’t working properly, you should consider replacing it. SizeRepair If your unit was installed by a professional and sized to fit your home’s cooling needs, it can last significantly longer. Replace Systems that aren’t sized properly are prone to premature failure and poor humidity control. Whether your air conditioner needs to be repaired or replaced, our expert team can help.

My dad gave me an old AC unit to set up for this Summer. It will probably need some repairs though. I'll keep what you said in mind though about only repairing it if it costs less than 50% of what a new one would cost me.

I like the measurement of if it will cost over 50% of a new AC unit to fix it then you should just get a new AC unit. My parents have this ancient AC unit and I have been telling them to stop fixing it and to just replace it because it costs so much to find parts for. I am going to send them this article as an "I told you so" haha.

Getting an AC unit replaced completely when an internal part is failing is definitely something I can see being a better idea. Our unit is quite old already, and I had some sense that some of its parts are starting to break faster than we expected. I'll take this opportunity to find an HVAC expert in the area that can help me get it replaced with a better unit.

It was fascinating to know that a clogged drain line can be fixed by AC repair. My sister told me that their AC unit is malfunctioning. I should advise her to hire an expert in AC services to get their unit fixed.

You made a great point about old AC units and how they're not very efficient and safe to use anymore. The old model we've been using for almost 10 years now has indeed been showing some signs of breaking down, so I can bet that we would benefit from getting a new unit right about now. Once we do, I'll take the old unit to a recycling plant so those parts can be put to good use.

I agree. Heating season is here, which means that before too long you’re going to be using your heating system to keep you warm for multiple hours a day. There are a lot of things that you can do to get your home properly prepared for the heating season. One of the best things you can do, though, is to make sure that your heating system gets proper maintenance.

It really helped when you said that a repair is still possible when the issue is minor such as having a clogged drain, worn capacitor, or some electrical issues. I will hire a heating repair service to check the actual problem for us, since I have no idea what kept our unit from turning on this evening. Hopefully, it can still be fixed because I have no extra money to buy a new one.

My sister was telling me the other day how she has to pay a lot in repairing her current AC unit. I'll have to share this advice with her so she can start looking for something different.

It was helpful when you said that you can get it repaired if it's less than 10 years old. My neighbor was at my house yesterday afternoon for lunch, and she talked about how her air conditioner has been making weird noises for the past couple of days, so she was wondering how to go about getting it fixed. I'll pass this information along to her so she can look into hiring an HVAC contractor to come and see if she needs to repair or replace it.

I'm glad you talked about understanding how much you'd spend on repairing your AC before making a decision, so I'll email this to my parents now. Thanks for the insight on making the right financial decision when repairing or replacing your HVAC unit.

I find it interesting when you said that it is worth repairing units that have a SEER rating of 13. It should probably be applicable to both residential and commercial heating units, since they might also have that kind of feature in their specifications. No matter the issue, it is always best to get the advice of a professional to ensure that minor problems will not escalate in the long run.

It's great that you elaborated that an SEER with a 13 function could still provide proper efficiency for your home. A couple of days ago, my wifey told me she was planning to have a heating system installed in our home to stay warm during the winter season. She asked if I had any idea what would be the best option to consider. I admire your advice, I'll consult a trusted furnace system service as they can help with more information about the system installation.

I thought it was informative when you explained that it is a good idea to replace an HVAC system that has a SEER rating below 13. When purchasing a new unit, you would probably want to make sure that you get one that won't have to work too hard to heat and cool your home. If you get a unit that is too small, you will probably waste a lot of money.
